Breaking a water fast

  1. fruit and vegetable juices - Not the processed kind with added sugar or from concentrate. Juice it yourself for best results. Head to your local juice bar if you don't have the time or patience. Finally, as a last resort buy juice like Naked or Suja (just don't get the kind with ginger or lemon it burns the fasting mouth) 
  2. raw fruits - Be sure to fully chew the fruit before swallowing to help release digestive enzymes and aid in the digestion.
  3. vegetable or bone broths - You can make your own with this recipe. Personally, I went to my local health food store A Movable Feast and purchased it frozen. There is the added benefit of supporting the local economy I find bone broths to be a little heavy for the empty stomach. They definitely smell of cooked animal which is normally very appetizing to me but it was almost  overwhelming with my faster's heighten sense of smell. Vegetable broth is great and I really enjoy the smell it is bland but I am not looking for anything too heavy just after 10 days of not eating.
  4. Kefir (or other living, cultured milk products), unsweetened - I am waiting to introduce kefir back into my diet after 2-3 days of eating. I know I recommend unsweetened but honestly, I will be drinking my pomegranate flavor. Unsweetened cultured milk products are disgusting to me and no amount of starvation will change my mind. 
I try to eat every 2-3 hours when breaking the fast. I keep the meals small as my stomach will cramp if I push it too hard. Pay close attention to your body's reactions to these "new" foods. Watch for any adverse reactions, perhaps signalling a mild allergy or that you have gone too far, too quickly. Feel for the sensation of fullness and stop eating at that point. Begin to train yourself to watch for that signal, so you'll always know when your body is fully nourished.
I have added a high quality probiotic that I take once daily. Strive to add live enzymes and good bacteria to your system. Fresh, raw foods are full of living enzymes good for your body and digestion. Probiotics, or "good" bacteria, can be found not only in pill form, but also in naturally cultured and fermented food products, such as yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and miso.

Do not ruin your hard work by scarfing down a large pizza. I have broken a fast this way and it was painful. My body violently rebelled against the influx of processed garbage.As a food addict,  I didn't care I just kept stuffing myself. Shame. Shame.
